Recent updates: February 2014

It's been a while since we updated this space! Sorry for the lack of updates!

Recently, we are working hard to bring you more unique collector's toys and reaching out to you in person!

We are currently holding pre-orders for the Superheroes Miniature series, do head over to our shop (www.TheToyProjectSG.com) to take a look and place your orders!

Self-collection for these pre-orders are available on 23rd February, where we will be having a pop-up store at China Square Central (CSC). If you are thinking of getting the actual stock only on the 23rd, then we can't guarantee that there will be ready stock for whichever particular characters you want. Fastest fingers first!

If you don't already know, we have two spaces at Toy Outpost, namely the Bugis Junction outlet (beside Simply Toys) and Vivo City outlet (near Samsung and the cinema).

So on days where we are not at the CSC bazaar, you know where to get our stuff! We do stock up on a regular basis =) And by the way, we will be closing off our space at Vivo City by mid-February 2014. Just FYI. Don't want our customers to go there expecting our toys to be in the usual spot but end up going home empty-handed.

We had many pop-up stores all over the island in December 2013 and it was quite the busy period for us!

History Class on The Toy Project!

Today we are having a history class at The Toy Project blog! After all, we are all about toys and collectibles. What's better than learning from scratch?

Toys were never considered as "the next big thing" until 1830s, when boats and trains encouraged the distribution of manufactured goods, including toys. Early toymakers used wood, tin and cast iron to fashion horses, soldiers and other simple toys.

Toys, like play itself, is multi-purpose. Other than providing entertainment, toys also play an educational role in young children's learning curve. Toys enhance cognitive behavior and stimulate creativity. One of the simplest toys, a set of simple wooden blocks is one of the best toys for developing young minds.

Charlotte Clark was commissioned in 1930 to create the first stuffed Mickey Mouse doll and it was an instant hit with all the kids in US! Hmmm, but it doesn't look really cute here, does it?

But toys are not exclusive to children! Adults have been collecting toys too and this is when people start auctioning popular toys, such as the Pez Dispenser! The most expensive Pezhead dispenser was sold for a whopping $7,000 between an Austrian dealer and US collector.

Toy manufacturers saw an opportunity in movie-related merchandise and I am sure you know by now, the Ironman series is a huge hit with all passionate collectors!

At The Toy Project, we strive to bring you the most unique toys. Maybe not mainstream collector's items. But definitely high quality and something with the "different" factor!

UglyDoll x Sanrio Hello Kitty

I am sure you must have played the card game UglyDoll before! But what's making everyone go crazy is the UglyDoll plushie itself!

UglyDoll made its debut appearance in David Horvath's letter to his wife, Sun-Min Kim, after she had to return to Korea as her student visa was soon expiring. Kim made a doll of the picture Horvath drew as a gift to him. Horvath showed the doll to his pal, Eric Nakamura, owner of the Giant Robot magazine and store. Nakamura thought Horvath was pitching a new toy to him and bought a few for his store. And that's how UglyDoll started....

Now, they have over 40 different dolls and each for different occasions as well!

Sanrio recently collaborated with UglyDoll to come up with a series of adorable Sanrio x UglyDoll plashes! They were a huge hit at the Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention 2013 this year!

Transformers 4: Age of Extinction

As you probably already know, Transformers 4: Age of Extinction will be coming to our movie theatres in June 2014!

There ain't much details released yet but we know for sure that Shia LaBeouf is not part of the cast this time round. Instead, Mark Wahlberg has taken over as Cade, a struggling inventor and single father in this fourth instalment.

Right: Mark Wahlberg

The film will feature two unknown Autobots who will transform into a black and blue 2013 Bugatti Veron Grand Sport Vitesse (going by production name "Drift"), and a green 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray concept (going by production name "Slingshot"). Optimus Prime's new alternate mode has also been set as a Western Star Truck.

According to sources, Decepticon bounty hunter Lockdown (a character that was featured in the 2007 Transformers: Animated reboot) pilots a ship full of "decommissioned Transformers" - including the Dinobots. The post suggests that Optimus Primie and Bumblebee then find a way to revive the Dinobots. It should be interesting and refreshing to have Dinobots in the picture!

Meanwhile, we are keeping our eyes peeled for more Transformers news! Can't wait for the movie to be out next year!

Get into the Transformers action with our Transformers mini series! Going at $16.90 each (blind box).

New York Comic Con 2013

New York Comic Con is the East Coast's biggest and most exciting popular culture convention. The Show Floor plays host to the latest and greatest in comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, toys, movies and television. The panel and autograph sessions give fans a chance to interact with their favorite creators (e.g. Humberto Ramos (Amazing Spider-man, Adam Hughes (Wonder Woman), Ivan Reis (Justice League), etc.). New York Comic Con is the second largest pop culture convention in America and the only one that takes place in the comic book, publishing, media and licensing capital of the world — Gotham City.

New York Comic-Con looks set to have its biggest year yet, with a slate heavy on popular TV shows and celebrity appearances. Based in Manhattan’s Javits Center, NYCC has grown in importance over the last few years. Although it can’t compete with the San Diego Comic-Con for pure breadth of buzz, NYCC has developed its own distinctive personality in the last few years.

DC Comics is highly visible this year. A large screen near the long lines of attendees waiting to enter the exhibit hall advertised the upcoming "Batman: Arkham Origins" video game to the captive audience. It comes out on October 25th.  Inside is an impressive exhibit of Superman movie and TV costumes. The exhibit celebrates 75 years of history of the DC Comic's flagship character.

Check out some best-dressed at the event!

They really go all out to dress up eh? Maybe we should do the same for STGCC 2014!

Our first post!

Hey everyone!

Thanks for reading this blog! We are a bunch of toy lovers and our interest went back since 1997! Of course, that was when we were still studying. Having finally graduated and started working, we did not lose our passion for toy collectibles. Not at all. One day over prata and eggs benedict, The Toy Project was conceived. We want to share our passion with you guys and make the toy collectors' community even bigger!

Please like our Facebook page here and follow us on Instagram (@thetoyproject) for the latest news. We will be posting some interesting toy facts or comics everyday to spice up your life!
